Promises Kept

Sauron promised his followers victory and world domination. As the movie unfolds we see that he does not deliver on that promise. He failed and let all those who followed him down.

Come to think of it we can all think of a time or two that we have been let down by others. Perhaps we have even let down a few people. Now, this is not to shame us but it is said in order to highlight Jesus who never lets us down. He always does what he says. In fact, what God says God does.

As we looked at Joshua 3:7-13 we noted that the main theme is God’s faithfulness.  First, we see that Joshua is exalted as a leader to God’s honor as promised. Check out what God says to Joshua in 1:5

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you”.

Now see what happens in Joshua 3:7:

“The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you”.

So what God says God does. God said he would be with Joshua making him a leader and so he was.

Also see what happens in 3:10-17. In 3:8 Joshua says, “Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you…” and give you victory in your conquest. Here is how. They are to take the ark and walk to the river. Once they get there the river will part and they will be able to walk past it. Because this will happen the people can know that God will be with them. What God says God does. God said he would part the river so they could get by and so he did.

But it gets better. In Genesis 3:15 God promises that someone will come and defeat the evil one. In Genesis 12 and 15, God promises that there will be someone who brings blessings for a people from a multitude of nations and bring them to the Promised Land. In 2 Samuel 7 God said that there would be someone who sits on the throne forever and that he would bring peace. Isaiah 49-55 shows that a servant of the Lord is going to bring peace through suffering. In Jeremiah 31 we see that God says one day he will bring in a new order. An order where God writes his law on his people’s heart.

Jesus is that someone! He defeated evil, brought blessings for the nations, rules from the throne of David, suffered to bring salvation, and established the new covenant! What God says God does. He promised that he would be honored in redeeming a people and would bring peace and so He has.

So, what promises has God given you? What promises has God kept for you?
