I have some amazing news to share this Labor Day weekend! My great-grandson, Silas, was born on Saturday, September 5th. My husband, James, made a funny joke to his mom about going into labor on Labor Day weekend. As many of us women know, labor is tough, but it’s the most incredible feeling to hold your brand-new baby. Little Silas has a few challenges ahead of him too. He’s a month early and will be having surgery this afternoon. We are so grateful, though, that he’s healthy, and we know that God is guiding Silas and his parents through this journey.
To remember Silas’s birthdate, September 5th, James started singing Dolly Parton’s “Working 9 to 5.” This song became a popular theme for women’s rights in the workplace. As I think about labor and work, I realize we can’t earn God’s love through our efforts. We’re born into the world for God’s pleasure, as Colossians 1:16 says, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” We’re created and made for God—a precious gift. We’re loved, and God is delighted with His creation. Isn’t that wonderful?
Let’s find fulfillment in being God’s beloved this Labor Day week, instead of seeking satisfaction, security, or salvation through our own efforts. I’ve included “Working 9 to 5” for fun with this week’s worship song. Happy Labor Day!
